Values and Ethos

To be the heartbeat of the community, rooted and established in God’s Love (Eph 3:17); bearing fruit in all seasons

(Jer 17:8).

Vision & Aims

"To be the heartbeat of the community, rooted and established in God’s Love (Eph 3:17); bearing fruit in all seasons (Jer 17:8)."

As a primary school living out a Christian Vision, we prioritise spiritual wellbeing and the Christian values of service, thankfulness, compassion, endurance, creativity, justice, peace, wisdom, hope and humility. These values permeate and drive the curriculum agenda from a spiritual perspective, while the powerful knowledge, skills and wisdom developed through the content and rigour of the curriculum enables pupils’ academic progress.

EXPLORE: WITHOUT FEAR; OUR POTENTIAL; SERVING OTHERS

Every new lesson, every book we read, every new friend and every Collective Worship is an opportunity to better understand the amazing world we live in.  At Ermine Street Church Academy, each day will be a brand-new adventure; a safe, nurtured, guided learning journey about the wonder of the world around us, made sense of through the lens of rich knowledge and explanations delivered by expert teachers.

DISCOVER: NEW TALENTS AND INTERESTS; FAMILY; WE BELONG

Once children have acquired the knowledge they need, children will be encouraged to reflect on and evaluate their knowledge, identify what understanding they can build on and what motivations they can harness for the next challenge to discover their true potential as learners and hope that our future leaders, scientists, geographers, historians, writers and role models can shape our world with wisdom, compassion and tenacity.

LEARN: TO REFLECT; COMPASSION; WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

As a result of the knowledge-rich and ambitious curriculum delivered by committed educators, learning will be lasting, relevant and test the limits of what we know now and how we can prepare our children for a continually changing future. Learners will be firmly on the path to becoming experts and masters because they will have the opportunity to apply what they know, understand and can do in a range of different contexts with meaning, purpose and a sense of fulfilment.

With firm foundations laid, as a result of research-informed teaching and continuous challenge offered through the highest expectations for all, children will be prepared for the next step in their learning journey, ready to thrive spiritually and academically.

Good behaviour is essential for effective teaching and learning to take place. At Ermine Street Church Academy, we believe that pupils and staff have the right to work and learn in an environment that is safe, calm, purposeful and fair. Our Christian values promote good citizenship and service to others.

We understand that good behaviour must be carefully taught, modelled, supported and expected of all. Careful curation of high self-esteem supports the development of good behaviour, effective learning and positive relationships. High self-esteem is nurtured through feeling valued and listened to, respected and from feeling a sense of achievement. The best results, in terms of promoting good behaviour, arise from emphasising potential, rewarding success and giving praise for effort and achievement, rather than focusing on mistakes or shortcomings.

However, consequences and sanctions are an important part of our approach too and are used to help children understand the difference between right and wrong. Research tells us that the severity of a sanction is less important than the certainty of the sanction, and therefore staff always apply sanctions with consistency and fairness in accordance with our Positive Behaviour Policy. Successes and effort are praised and valued highly throughout the school community through celebration in class and during Collective Worship.

Pupils, families, teachers and support staff are all expected to take collective responsibility for the promotion of the highest standards of behaviour at Ermine Street Church Academy. We welcome opportunities to discuss the promotion of good behaviour with parents and carers and will work in partnership with families and other relevant parties when the behaviour of a child requires further support.

All children, staff and visitors are encouraged to live by ‘The Ermine Street Ethos’ whilst in school.

A copy of our Positive Behaviour Policy and our Anti-Bullying Policy can be found on our 'Policies' page.

Our Positive Behaviour Policy also encompasses reference to exclusion guidance.
