Art Curriculum Overview

Overview

Art consists of paintings, sculpture, and other pictures or objects which are created for people to look at and admire or think deeply about. Studying art and design provides the opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge of different art forms, media and techniques.

Children at Ermine Street Church Academy start on their art education journey in the early years foundation stage (EYFS).  They begin to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products and use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination. In the early years, children begin to acquire some of the practical art knowledge that they will build on through the rest of their schooling.

Our aim is to develop students’ understanding and appreciation of art, and of art history, as well as to develop their ability to produce art themselves. Learning through and about the arts will enrich our students’ experience and encourages self-expression and creativity.

The Art Curriculum will provide our students with knowledge not only of artists, designers, architects and their work, but of the artistic concepts that relate to their work shown in different types and styles of art, how these relate to each other in a historical context and how this affects the children’s own use of materials and development of skills. Importantly, meaningful opportunities for self-expression and individual response are woven through the curriculum, giving children space to learn who they are as an artist.
